Day 2 - in the Apartment with Mia
Nathan and I are not adjusting to the time change as quickly as we usually do. I think this is due to how emotionally and physically exhausted we are. It's been such a long five weeks. We awoke at 2 a.m. and stayed up until 4 a.m. We both fell asleep and slept until Mia awoke at 7 a.m.
She had banana cereal and some banana for breakfast. She still didn't seem very hungry. While the orphanage director commented in court that she could feed herself, dress herself and was potty trained, we have seen no evidence of any of these skills. She seems to be just starting to learn to self feed. She can take a Gerber Fruit Puff with a little struggle but won't help herself to a small piece of banana. I think it's that she doesn't want to get her fingers dirty. She is a girl after all.
She seemed mildly interested in Baby Einstein and seemed to like the music most of all. The various toys that we brought have met with limited approval. The crinkly toys that can be chewed on seem to rate a B+, the cloth book on puppies seems to get a B, the doll was cast away as far as she could throw it (perhaps she thought this was going to be competition for her) so that gets a D, the plastic keys that light up are another B. So ... we have no A grade toys and she seems to prefer sitting in our lap to most things. She is absolutely a different kind of person than Sasha.
She has a little bit of congestion and in all the myriad of products that I brought from home, I don't have a baby decongestant. David, the apartment owner, is going to visit a local Apteka (pharmacy) to see what they recommend and pick something up for us. She coughs a bit but you can hear the 'gurgle' in her lungs. Sasha had a similar sound when we visited him once at the orphanage. She also will not drink out of a sippy cup even one that I opened the top for. I think David is going to see if there is another type that we can try. They were using a large tea cup to give her beverages and this, as you might imagine, has limited success as more milk spills down her front than reaches her mouth.
Mia's morning nap didn't work out well. She finally fell asleep and the phone rang. It was some computerized telemarketing deal - yes, they have those here as well. She never really fell asleep after that. Now she is down for her afternoon nap and she's fighting that as well despite being very tired and almost falling asleep on the carpet.
YEA ... she's finally asleep. Hopefully she starts to feel more like herself once she gets back onto her sleep schedule. Oh I spoke too soon. After 45 minutes, she's crying again. She's just so overtired. She really can raise a ruckiss when she sets her mind to it. She seems so small but she really has a great set of lungs on her. OOh ... and the big news ... we see at least one TOOTH. Yea! Now we're still hoping for more than two but I think she's teething and that has to put one in a bad mood.
