My First Day ... Alone ... With Him

Okay ... so I'll admit to being a little intimidated about my first day alone with the munchkin. After all, he can be quite demanding and sometimes requires a level of entertainment that I don't think I'm capable of.

So ... pushing my fears aside, we began our day. He awoke at 6:45 a.m. (yes, every day his start time appears to be getting earlier - is he 1 going on 40??). Nathan hustled him in for his bath while I prepared the boys' meals (Sasha and Nathan breakfast and Nathan's snacks and lunch for the day - yes, I do sound a bit Martha Stewart'ish but I wouldn't place any bets to the longevity of this spree). I helped grease Sasha up prior to descending for breakfast. Sasha continues to be an eating machine and I promise you he can eat more than double what I can at any meal.

Nathan left for work after a fun game of 'where did I put my keys' (which he hasn't yet found but fortunately I have his extra car key). Sasha and I played for a bit with his mound of family room toys. I made up a batch of mashed sweet potatoes. With Sasha's skin problems, we're trying to keep his foods whole and sans additives / preservatives. After the sweet potatoes, I moved on to homemade apple sauce (yes, certainly a Martha Stewart day). The applesauce was out of the Joy of Cooking, one of my all time fav cookbooks, and didn't require any cooking. The ingredients were simple - apples, lemon juice and brown sugar - cinnamon optional. The result was a slightly crunchy, totally yummy apple sauce. Sasha stood and begged at the counter for more and more spoonfuls. Yum.

Sasha went down for his morning nap around 9:30 a.m. He seems to be sleeping less so I thought we'd try a bit longer play time. He was bummed to go down for his nap although I found that tucking in his blankie all around him seems to quiet him down. Nathan thought I was a miracle worker when he tried this technique yesterday. I'm not sure why it works. Perhaps it makes him feel more secure. Perhaps he thinks he's bound and it's pointless to fight it. I just don't know but it works.

We headed to Dominick's for some grocery shopping this afternoon. For some reason, Sasha always protests getting into the car. Now, you've seen the throne that is his car seat so I have no idea why anyone wouldn't be crazy about riding it. Add Mom making funny noises, voices and anything else she can do to get your mind off the ride and I think you have a fun time on wheels. Sasha was very good at the grocery store. He seemed mildly amused at my attempts to make him smile (he's still practicing the stone faced Russian look a lot) and seemed comforted by the tremendous volume of food readily available of the shelves of a store less than five minutes from our house.

We arrived home, unloaded the groceries and picked fresh, ripe vegetables from our garden. Sasha asked for a cherry tomato and really seemed to enjoy the vine fresh beauty squirting in his mouth. He also found the Lamb's Ear that I had purposely planted at the garden's edge for him to find. He stroked the plant lovingly while I continued to harvest the fresh produce.

Nap time arrived around 2:30 p.m. and, surprisingly, he went down without any drama. At every sleeping time, he gets to listen to a different cd of relaxing music. This afternoon was relaxing classical. This morning was Baby Einstein Sleeping Lullabies. He's really taking advantage of his new Bose!

We ventured off to our District Committee meeting where Sasha behaved himself. The key seems to be as long as he has something to eat, he's good. Eventually he started making cooing noises that seemed to get louder as the evening progressed - perhaps an early passion for scouting? We got home late but thought that perhaps each day really is getting easier and eventually those stone faced looks will be replaced with sunny smiles and baby giggles.
